HYLIFe  II Offers  75 Youth Total Development Options

Fall 2000 A Community-Wide Informational Source of  the Blue Springs-Hoke  County CDC  Vol. 4, Issue 1

Hoke Youth Life In Focus (HYLIFe) an after-school  comprehensive youth development program for middle and high school students in Hoke County  will get into full swing for a third session on September 25, 2000 at Hoke High School.  The program was launched in October 1999 and is receiving second year funding through a continuing support grant of $75,000 from the NC Department of Health and Human Services/Division of Public Health.  The initial pilot run in 1999-2000 offered sixty (60) slots for students 12 to 19 years of age to become involved in making healthy preventative life choices. They also received life skills training in topic areas which include computer literacy and  economic literacy. One-to-one mentoring, and academic tutoring are also key program components which focus on preparing tomorrow's leaders today.  Year II provides 15 additional slots and step-up activity which includes "rites of passage"  and entrepreneurial skills.

The "Teen Outreach Program (TOP)" and the "WISE GUYS Male Responsibility Curriculum" are two "best practice" education models which guide core classroom interactions. Service Learning perspectives additionally offer students opportunities to complete community service projects, drawing on information from classroom subjects and their learning from community contacts.  Time to reflect on their service plays a key role in the process of  allowing students to name what impact doing service makes  on their lives and the  community.

An added focus for HYLIFe II will be classes for parents and students together which will be delivered in seven (7) sessions of 2-hours each . This component will greatly assist parents in completing their monthly 10-hour requirement of support for HYLIFe students .
