"Turning It Around: Offering Juveniles New Life Paths and New Life Perspectives" (TIA) is a rural community-based project of the Blue Springs Hoke County Community Development Corporation. It is supported directly by North Carolina's Governor's Crime Commission and provides targeted prevention and intervention strategies for youthful offenders and other vulnerable youth. TIA offers three major components and approaches:
Educational Perspectives via Classroom contacts Combines hard-hitting videos supplied by the National Campaign to Prevent Pregnancy, the American Council for Drug Education, the National Council for Drug Education, the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependency, and others. Participants are provided exposure to a state DHHS-approved best-practice sexual and social responsibility curriculum, Wise Guys II. Also, concentration on academic deficiencies through tutoring and enhancement of computer and life skills are given significant attention.
Comprehensive Array of Adolescent Services An array of services, including health exams, social service screens, and risk management counseling ensure that each referred and volunteer participant is encouraged to become health conscious and well-being focused as a priority among wise preventive life choices to be made.
Civic Responsibility Through Service Learning Participants actually move the concept of community service to another level by building in the consciousness of civic responsibility and intentional reflection on those services for understanding the impact to both providers and beneficiaries.
