NIH

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is recognized as the lead federal agency for protecting the health and safety of people - at home and abroad, providing credible information to enhance health decisions, and promoting health through strong partnerships. CDC serves as the national focus for developing and applying disease prevention and control, environmental health, and health promotion and education activities designed to improve the health of the people of the United States.

OSHA

Occupational Safety and Health Administration mission is to save lives, prevent injuries and protect the health of America's workers. To accomplish this, federal and state governments must work in partnership with the more than 100 million working men and women and their six and a half million employers who are covered by the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970.
 

FDA

US Food and Drug Administration is responsible for protecting the public health by assuring the safety, efficacy, and security of human and veterinary drugs, biological products, medical devices, our nation’s food supply, cosmetics, and products that emit radiation. The FDA is also responsible for advancing the public health by helping to speed innovations that make medicines and foods more effective, safer, and more affordable; and helping the public get the accurate, science-based information they need to use medicines and foods to improve their health.

USDA

Surgeon General

Office of the Surgeon General, under the direction of the Surgeon General, oversees the 6,000-member Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service and provides support for the Surgeon General in the accomplishment of his other duties.  The Office is part of the Office of Public Health and Science, Office of the Secretary, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

OPHS

Office of Public Health and Science  is under the direction of the Assistant Secretary for Health (ASH), who serves as the Secretary's primary advisor on matters involving the nation's public health and oversees HHS' U.S. Public Health Service (PHS) for the Secretary. The PHS is comprised of the eight health agency divisions of HHS and the Commissioned Corps, a uniformed service of more than 6,000 health professionals who serve at HHS and other federal agencies.

IHS

Indian Health Service is an agency within the Department of Health and Human Services, is responsible for providing federal health services to American Indians and Alaska Natives. The provision of health services to members of federally-recognized tribes grew out of the special government-to-government relationship between the federal government and Indian tribes. This relationship, established in 1787, is based on Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution, and has been given form and substance by numerous treaties, laws, Supreme Court decisions, and Executive Orders. The IHS is the principal federal health care provider and health advocate for Indian people, and its goal is to raise their health status to the highest possible level. The IHS currently provides health services to approximately 1.5 million American Indians and Alaska Natives who belong to more than 557 federally recognized tribes in 35 states.

The state of health for African-Americans is especially precarious. Chronic disease has an excessive impact on minority populations.
CTHG Closing The Health Gap is an educational campaign designed to help make good health an important issue among racial and ethnic minority populations who are affected by serious diseases and health conditions at far greater rates than other Americans.
IOM

Institute of Medicine Report: Unequal Treatment: Confronting Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Health Care  assesses the extent of disparities in the types and quality of health services received by U.S. racial and ethnic minorities and non-minorities; explores factors that may contribute to inequities in care; and recommends policies and practices to eliminate these inequities.

NORTH CAROLINA

NCIOM NC Institute of Medicine is an independent, non-profit organization that serves as a non-political source of health policy analysis and advice in North Carolina. The NC General Assembly chartered the NC IOM in 1983 to provide balanced, nonpartisan information on complex and often controversial health issues in the state.
NCHHS NC Department of Health and Human Services is the largest agency in state government, responsible for ensuring the health, safety and well being of all North Carolinians, providing the human service needs for fragile populations like the mentally ill, deaf, blind and developmentally disabled, and helping poor North Carolinians achieve economic independence.
HSL Health Sciences Library is the primary library for the UNC-Chapel Hill Schools of Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Public Health and the University of North Carolina Hospitals,. It also serves the health information needs of the entire university. The library serves the state’s health professionals through the Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) Library and Information Services Network.  The library is open to the public and users have free access to the open collections. The library collections contain over 290,000 volumes, including recent and historical materials, 4,000 current serial titles, and over 8,900 audiovisual and microcomputer software programs.
UNCSPH

UNC School of Public Health mission is to improve the health and well-being of the population. It accomplishes this mission through the interaction of: Teaching: to educate students to assume and continue professional and leadership roles in public health practice, policy, research, and teaching. Research (basic and applied): to advance knowledge and understanding of the biological, social, behavioral, environmental, and economic factors affecting the health status of the population. Service and Professional Practice: to provide broad-based technical assistance and consultation on public health issues in the public and private sectors at local, state, national, and international levels. The UNC-Chapel Hill School of Public Health has set four themes to guide its efforts for the next five years: (1) PROTECTING against threats to health, (2) EMPOWERING people to lead healthy lives, (3) IMPROVING the quality of health services, an (4) PREPARING leaders to advance health.

NCHAC NC Health Access Coalition is a group of citizens and consumer organizations concerned about health care in North Carolina. The Coalition's goal is to help consumers become forceful participants in the health policy debate in order to ensure that every person in North Carolina has affordable, accessible and high quality health care services that meet their basic needs. The Coalition has been working to involve and to educate consumers in the health care policymaking process since its inception in 1991.
HHS DOP Division of Public Health has developed various websites to meet the needs of North Carolina residents, as well as those living outside the "Tar Heel State." Its server, housed at the State Center for Health Statistics, is home to some of those websites. Each site offers different types of information to the public.
NCHCFA

NC Health Care Facilities Association was organized in 1956, and represents approximately 90% of the licensed nursing homes in North Carolina. Through government relations, continuing education, trade shows, community service projects, quality assurance, publications, and research, the NCHCFA focuses attention on the evolution of the long term health care profession and keeps its member facilities updated on the latest developments.

AHEC Area Health Education Centers mission is to meet the state's health and health workforce needs by providing educational programs in partnership with academic institutions, healthcare agencies, and other organizations committed to improving the health of the people of North Carolina.
DENR DEH Department of Environment and Natural Resources--Division of Environmental Health goal is to safeguard life, promote human health, and protect the environment through the practice of modern environmental health science, the use of technology, rules, public education, and above all, dedication to the public trust."
NC-HCAP NC Health Careers Access Program

To increase the number of individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds who are trained, educated and employed in the health professions.   NC-HCAP does this by increasing awareness of career opportunities in the health professions, cultivating interests in pursuit of health professions, enhancing opportunities to gain access to formal training and education programs in health professions, and  increasing the probability of success in completing formal training and education programs in the health professions.

NCDOL OSH NC Department of Labor Occupational Safety and Health Division administers and enforces the 1973 Occupational Safety and Health Act of North Carolina, a broadly inclusive law which applies to most private sector employment in the State and to all agencies of state and local government. North Carolina currently conducts one of 25 state-administered occupational safety and health programs in the nation.

WIC Women, Infants, and Children is also called the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program. WIC is a federal program designed to provide food to low-income pregnant, postpartum and breastfeeding women, infants and children until the age of five. The program provides a combination of nutrition education, supplemental foods, breastfeeding promotion and support, and referrals for health care. WIC has proven effective in preventing and improving nutrition related health problems within its population.
 

HOKE/RAEFORD

FirstHealth FirstHealth of the Carolinas is a private, non-governmental, not-for-profit health care network serving 15 counties in the mid-Carolinas--including Hoke.
NCHI NC Health Info offers access to web sites of local health services, providers and programs serving residents of North Carolina. Through its connection with MEDLINEplus, a service of the National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health, users of the site can get information about conditions, diseases and wellness, and find web sites of local health services, programs and providers throughout North Carolina. NC Health Info offers an initial collection of 2287 web sites serving North Carolina citizens.  TIP: Use "QuickStart" and choose "Topic", then go to Hoke County as the "Location" for information.
CRID First Health Community Resource and Information Directory enables searches by keyword or subject for specific community agencies and resources available in Hoke, Montgomery, Moore and Richmond counties.

Community Voices First Health Community Voices is part of thirteen communities across the nation participating in this five-year Initiative. The Initiative is designed to strengthen community support services and to help ensure the survival of safety net providers. Communities are piloting different approaches and strategies.
